When a patient is suffering from arthritis his musculoskeletal system is affected; the joints become very painful and stiff, there is a lot of swelling at the joints and the joint cartilage gets damaged. Bones have a tissue cover on them which protects them while rubbing against each other called cartilage. They are like the glands in our body and the cells they are made of are called chondrocytes. The life cycle of the chondrocytes is like all cells and they die and new ones are formed.
When there is prolonged inflammation, cartilage cells are destroyed and die faster than the body’s ability to replace them. This is especially true if there has been an injury or there are not enough proper nutrients in the body to repair the joint. Lack of sufficient cartilage, can cause instability, joint weakness, pain and deformity, all of which affect and interrupt regular activities. A person suffering from arthritis needs to bring about a change in his day to day living and requires proper medication and physiotherapy. Joint replacement surgery is a last option after healthcare providers have tried other less intrusive interventions to relieve the discomfort.
Arthritis is mainly categorized into two types, ‘localized’ and ‘generalized’ depending on which areas are affected (body or the joints); they are then sub categorized further. Localized conditions are where the soft tissue around the bone or joint is affected; it refers to conditions like tendonitis and bursitis. A sub category of localized conditions is when only one or two joints are affected like the hip or the knee. One of the foremost sub-categories of generalized arthritis is a condition that affects muscle and soft tissue without swelling or inflammation. In this condition there is no joint damage and fibromyalgia belongs to this category.
Another sub-category involves inflammation affecting the entire body. Gout, psoriatic arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are examples of this condition. The other kinds of this condition are vasculitis (any organ); polymyositis (muscles); and systemic lupus erythematosus (skin, kidneys, or other organs).
However a person may suffer from multiple kinds of arthritis, in the United States of America around forty six million adults and abut three hundred thousand children suffer from hundred medical conditions. The condition is most common as osteoarthritis in adults age 60 and above but it can start as early as infancy. The number of people suffering out of this condition is increasing proportionally with the increasing average age of the American population; with old age setting in people suffering with arthritis is increasing day by day.
Arthritis and related illnesses are the cause of major disability in the U.S. and costs over 124 billion dollars a year in medical care and indirect expenses. Arthritis home remedies involve keeping a check on the weight and by eating fresh vegetables and fruits that contain vitamin C and Vitamin D. Regular exercise and consumption of up to 1000 to 1500 mg of calcium per day for adults would help them avoid injuries caused by sports activities.

Antioxidants are naturally occurring substances found in most plants and have the potential to help combat heart diseases and fight cancer. Phytonutrients found in fruits and vegetables work together with other nutrients to protect your health. To date, scientists have managed to index almost a 1,000 of these unusual compounds, these protective plant compounds are an emerging area of health and nutrition, with new research reported almost daily. To date a large number of health giving benefits of these phytonutrients have been found, cherries for instance are able to reduce the pain in joints and blueberries have anti-aging properties.
Containing many different antioxidants, blueberries also have one of the lowest sugar contents of the fruits tested. Currently the most efficient and pleasurable way to get the benefits of these fruits is by drinking their juice, some of the many benefits have been improvements in the body’s capacity to heal itself and benefits to circulation. Not content with helping to prevent illness, these antioxidants also help fight disease and infection. The old saying about an apple-a-day couldn’t be truer with evidence that they can help prevent the chance of heart conditions occurring.
Phytochemicals which can be an aid to our health are even contained in citrus fruits. Tart cherries can also provide anti-inflammatory benefits to people who suffer with conditions that cause pain in and around the joints. Of course we already now about the benefits of certain vitamins and minerals, which have been available for some time. A large group of common berries also contain specialized antioxidants called Phytoalexins (resveratrol),
These amazing compounds seem to benefit the elderly with many properties that help reduce conditions found in aging like Alzheimer’s, heart disease, blood pressure and stoke. Others found in tomatoes make this one super-food in the prevention of heart disease. Any physical trainer will tell you to perform some stretching exercises before you start any form of fitness training to prevent possible injury. However, there are a number of preventative practices that you should carry out as a matter of necessity if you are going to pursue any type of physical activity. Stretching increases the ability of muscles to flex and contract and is just as useful when you have finished exercising. Almost everyone knows that stretching before workout prevents injuries, but only a few people know that stretching after workout, when muscles are still warm, can increase flexibility.
For most warm-ups it is quite acceptable to hold a stretching position for twenty seconds but to really extend the muscles groups and joint flexibility, this should be lengthened to one minute. Do not go into a stretching position then immediately return to the relaxed position; and, do it repeatedly which is more appropriately termed bouncing while in a position. Ideally the stretch should last a few seconds then a slow return because it is easy to damage joints or even pull muscles when this is not done correctly. Work slowly in increments instead of immediately proceeding to doing the hardest exercise or position so make sure that you have stretched or warmed up all muscle groups.
A commonly forgotten area of the body to warm up, and one that is easy to injure, is the neck so make sure that the neck is warmed up by applying pressure to the head at the front, back and sides using pressure from the palm of your hand. If you carry out regular stretching prior to fitness training you will be surprised just how flexible your body becomes and it will increase your ability to perform certain training. Never try to compete with the abilities of others as this is a sure way to injure yourself; even if not at the time, you will almost certainly feel it later when you body has cooled down. Do not expect your body to be able to carry out the same exercises and level of training every time you go to the gym because some days you will have a better workout than others; this is perfectly normal and to be expected.
Fitness training everyday can be punishing for the muscles and does not allow them to heal and grow so try to leave a day between workouts. Aerobic exercises are very good for the health of your heart and improve lung capacity and lower the heart rate; look to carry out rowing, running, skipping for example before you start attacking the weight machines. It is well known that music makes exercise easier as the beat is something you can follow and these days the tiny mp3 players can be attached without too much bother. While most come complete with headphones, it is s good idea to have some good ones because if you have your music loud, it is quite easy for others to be disturbed by it. Apart from preventing injuries and increasing your limit, it is also said that stretching is good for a tired body and also for a stressed mind and spirit.
